BARBADOS WORKING TO ATTRACT MORE NORTH AMERICAN RUNNERS FOR 2009 POWERADE RUN
Publication Date: 1/6/2009

Barbados is working to attract more North American runners  for the 2009 Powerade Run Barbados road race series. Following the 2008 series, staged from December 5-7, which attracted more than 1200 runners for the four events, organizers are expecting higher numbers from Canada next year.

Coordinator of the Toronto Marathon in Canada, Jay Glassman was among those hosted by the BTA to witness the 2008 Powerade Run Barbados events and will be working with organizers to promote the event in Canada.

Glassman said Barbados had several positives going for it and there was great potential to further develop the race series, which mainly attracts runners from Europe, the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.

The Toronto marathon attracts more than 12 000 runners from 50 countries and Barbados is seeking to create alliances that will help to promote its December events to a global market.

The 2008 Powerade Run Barbados road race series included the Midnight Fun Mile in St. Lawrence Gap, the Nature Valley 10K run, the Scotia Bank iN Fo' Life Half Marathon and the Powerade Marathon.

Coinciding with the road running series, an exposition and health fair was also staged at the Bay Street Esplanade on the day of the Nature Valley 10K.

For the first time fans from across the globe were allowed to share their photos, videos and thoughts on the Series on the popular online community, Facebook, which is also accessible through the official website, www.runbarbados.org.

The excitement will continue on February 3, 2008 when the Run Barbados organizing committee will partner with their friends at Cruise to Run to host a Barbados 5K.  For further information contact the Barbados Tourism Authority at (246) 427-2623 or email nataliew@visitbarbados.org.
